Sightings

Bird Fair 2015

22.08.15

On day two of the Rutland Birdfair, we had to rush through Marquee 1 as we heard on the tannoy that a Lesser Whitethroat was about to be ringed at the BTO stand. When we got there a Sedge Warbler was just about to be released after it had been ringed. The Lesser Whitethroat is a Summer Migrant from Africa and slighty scarcer than the Common Whitethroat. As soon as it was weighed and measured, they put a ring and released it back into the wild. Next out of the bag was a Reed Warbler, Blue Tit & 2 more Sedge Warblers. These birds that were caught in the mist nets were all Juveniles, as the Adults were now in the middle of a heavy moult. After watching the birdringing we went to meet Simon King in his Wildlife Marquee and also Henry the Hen Harrier made an appearnce at the same time. The first talk we went to see was called "Chris Packham and the Young Birders". Chris Packham started with an introduction, then it was Josie Hewitt talking about birdringing. Connor, another young birder, talked about bird photography and then Georgia Locock talked about capturing wildlife on camera traps and working towards wildlife protection. We went to Marquee 3 where we met Nick Baker who was doing a book signing. We then did a bit of birdwatching to look for the Wood Sandpiper that had been reported. We saw a Male Ruddy Darter that landed on a wooden bench.

The Juvenile Wood Sandpiper was showing well from the Shoveler Hide with a couple of Green Sandpipers. After a while it flew to the back of the lake as a couple of Ruff came in. These again are all Juveniles and were showing well right in front of the hide. A Juvenile Greenshank was also feeding in front of the hide. There was a couple of Common Snipe feeding at the back of the lake. A Juvenile Dunlin kept company with the Wood & Green Sandpiper. A Male Wigeon was present in eclipse plumage. A couple of Stock Doves were drinking at the edge of the lake and then perched on a post. In the afternoon we went to meet Bill Oddie in Marquee 3  and ask him to sign my Birdfair progamme. It had been a very hot day and poor Bill looked very hot and weary when he arrived. Mum had bought his latest book ‘Bill Oddie Unplucked’ and he signed that for her. We then went to the final talk of the day by David Lindo and it was called "Vote for Britain's National Bird" and he told us how the Robin was voted Britains National Bird.

We got to Rutland Water about lunchtime as we had left a bit late, and spent our first day of the annual birdwatching fair at the Lyndon Reserve. The Tree Sparrows were not showing themselves very much as in previous years, but I managed to see a few. We went to see how the Ospreys were getting on this year at Manton Bay. Last year there were no chicks raised here. This year there were three Juveniles, which were around or near the nest site. The Adult Female ‘Mya’ was also present near the nest to keep a watch over the youngsters.  One was sitting on the nest and the other two were perched in the trees behind. The Male was flying around chasing a Buzzard away from the nest site. It was great to see five Ospreys around at the same time. I was hoping the Male might go fishing, but they most have already eaten. There were other birds there too including Ruff, Little Egret, Green Sandpiper, Pied Wagtails, Grey Heron, Cormorants & Lapwing. We had to leave early to get ready for the evening talk with Chris Packham, Simon King & Nick Baker with Young Birders Josie Hewitt and Georgia Locock in the Events Marquee. It was a very enjoyable talk.

The final day of the 2015 Birdfair at Rutland Water began at the BTO stand again and surprisingly they had managed to catch a Male Sparrowhawk. An interesting catch as Sparrowhawks normally can avoid the mist nets and fly out very quickly. Not so on this occasion! After being ringed it was put on to a post and it took off towards some trees. We were in Marquee 3 when Simon King came on the Wildlife Trust stand and read about the Peregrine Falcon. Next we popped along to a talk by Martin Hughes-Games called "A Wild Life". The next event was called "Birdless Pointbrain” hosted by Nigel Redman & assisted by Neil Glenn. The contestents were Stephen Moss, Nick Baker, Martin Hughes-Games and Mike Dilger coupled with volunteers from Rutland Water. This quiz was based on the TV Show "Pointless" which Martin was on with Michaela Strachan and they went out in the first round, which is exactly what happened this time.
While Mum stayed for the Simon King talk, Dad and I went to get my programme signed by Martin Hughes- Games. David Lindo was also doing book signing. I wanted to get my new calender for 2016 from Simon King Wildlife, so I left it to last to save carrying it around all day and I asked him sign it. We had a final birdwatch around Rutland Water and the Black - headed Gulls, Green Sandpipers, Ruff, Stock Dove, Little Egrets & Wood Sandpiper were all still present from the Shoveler Hide. Just before we left to make our way home, we had a fly over Osprey and a Great White Egret appeared from behind some reeds and flew right in front of the hide. It certainly was a brilliant way to end the 2015 Birdfair!
