Roel Gate, Hawling & Epney 28th July 2022
We went on tour of the Cotswold to listen for Quail. We heard at least 4 Males near Roel Gate, Hawling in the late afternoon. A Male Yellowhammer was singing on the wire. Four Red Kites flew around the area. After dipping out on the bird on 22nd July, we went back to Epney to look for the Turtle Dove. Not long after we arrived, it perched on the wire right in front of us, before flying off. It then landed on the post calling, but was difficult to hear at times due to a motorbike engine making a racket. Afterwards a Goldfinch famiy were seen on the wire. After having a bath out of site, The Turtle Dove returned to the post for a bit of preen. After a while it flew off. While we waited to see if it came back, we watched some flying Ants emerging. They climbed up a post before taking to the air and were sitting targets for the House Sparrows that kept returning to the post picking off individuals. A Hobby made a unexpected appearance flying over the village catching some of the flying Ants that were in the air.
